Snaps from the floor
The dining room, the long casino room, plates from the pass and a few of the people who make an evening at the house.
The house by lamplight

“The room is exactly as photographed: long, calm and lit like a good library. The pictures do not flatter it, which is more than most places can say.”
Graham, visiting geologist
How these photographs were made

Most of the photographs on this page were taken on ordinary evenings, using the available light, by members of staff who happened to have a camera in hand. We have avoided the staged shot wherever possible, because a house of this kind is better understood by looking at how it really appears than at how it might be made to look.
The pictures of the dining room were taken in the half hour before service, when the tables are laid and the light from the western windows is at its best. Those of the casino room show it in use, with guests absorbed in the game, and we have taken care to preserve the privacy of those who appear.
Photographs of the food were taken at the pass in the course of service, and show the dishes as they leave the kitchen. If a plate looks slightly different when it arrives at your table, that is because Trevor believes in honest cooking, and an honest plate occasionally slips.
Guests are welcome to photograph the house, the food and their own party. We ask only that the dealers, other guests and the cards on the table be left out of the frame unless permission has been given.
Photographs are replaced from time to time as the house changes. The menu is rewritten, a lamp is moved, a table is recovered in new baize, and the pictures follow a few weeks later. What you see here is therefore a record of the recent past rather than a promise about next week.
If you would like a photograph removed, telephone or write to the address in the footer, and it will be taken down promptly. We keep no list of names and ask for no reason.
